Did you know that West Virginia was formed as a direct result of a split with Virginia (of which it once was a part) over the issue of slavery? Apparently state representatives from the Western portion of the state believed slavery should be abolished, and just prior to the start of the Civil War set up their own government for their part of the state. It was a secesation over slavery. And we joke West Virginia for being backwards! Who knew?
