An American on trial for allegedly torturing Afghan terror suspects in a private jail claimed Saturday in his first interview from custody that he was hot on the heels of Osama bin Laden and other militant leaders when he was arrested on July 5.
Jonathan Idema told The Associated Press he had official sanction from Afghans and Americans to hunt down terrorists and said he has been prevented from showing the evidence in court. Prosecutors say Idema was waging a private war, and he faces up to 20 years in a crumbling Afghan prison if convicted. |
The story's pretty insane, I admit. But weirder things have been true, haven't they? I'm not saying I believe the guy, far from it. I do feel bad for him though. Either he's crazy, or he's telling the truth and has absolutely no way to prove it. If nothing else he tells a good story. Hey... maybe he call sell the book and movie rights?
Does make you wonder though... what ever happend to Osama? I guess Bush didn't really mean it when he said we wanted him "dead or alive". Or should we start making odds on an October appearance by the man himself?
Either way, it probably doesn't make a difference. After all, the world is just SOOOO much safer, right?. Afghanistan is a democacy without enough security to hold an election, and Iraq is following right in line. Let's vote for another four years and maybe we'll be able to "transform" the entire Middle East! Brilliant!
Thanks G for passing that one along...
