More Swift Boat Madness

For those of you who missed the NY Times piece today, here's a link.

What the Post started yesterday, the Times finished today. Only they do it in much, MUCH greater detail.

Now, a few of my own thoughts:

* It's nice to see that the media is finally doing there job on attacks like this. Whether you're on the right or the left, you should be happy that someone out there is attempting to fact check on stuff like this. Personally, I think these ads are pathetic, but that's really beside the point. What's important is that they do not go unanswered. Today, its attacks from the right. Tomorrow, it may be attacks from the left. Ultimately, what we should all want is for the truth to prevail, irregardless of our political stripes.

Maybe I'm naive, but I always thought politics was about deciding who governs, and governing was about making people's lives better. I never thought it was just about winning and losing. Every once in awhile it'd be nice if our leaders would remember that.

* While I understand politically why Bush hasn't come out and condemned these attacks, I think it may be a mistake. And not for the reasons you might suspect. As I said a few weeks back, I think this election is going ot be won and lost in the debates. And if I were Bush, I'd want to do everything I can to take the Vietnam issue off the table by then. By not condemning these ads, Bush is essentially saying that service in Vietnam is fair game. Come October, this Swift Boat thing will have blown over, but Vietnam will still be alive. And I just don't see how that plays well for Mr. President.

Compare and contrast:

Bush serves in Stateside Air National Guard. Records go missing. Literally no one can be found to support his contention that he served during the period in question.

Kerry volunteers to serve in Vietnam. Serves with distinction, winning numerous medals. Shipmates all wholeheartedly support, respect, and admire him, while others question his service and the validity of his medals.

Ultimately, both issues come down to record keeping and he-said-she-said bickering. And while there may be debate over Kerry's service, he at least has men willing to step forward and say he served with courage. Where are those who will say the same for Bush?
