Control the Language

Just how complete is the control of the meaning and use of language by conservatives? Check this out:
GRANTSBURG, Wis. - The city's school board has revised its science curriculum to allow the teaching of creationism, prompting an outcry from more than 300 educators who urged that the decision be reversed.

School board members believed that a state law governing the teaching of evolution was too restrictive. The science curriculum "should not be totally inclusive of just one scientific theory," said Joni Burgin, superintendent of the district of 1,000 students in northwest Wisconsin.

Last month, when the board examined its science curriculum, language was added calling for "various models/theories" of origin to be incorporated.

For the record, here is the definition of scientific theory:

scientific theory: a theory that explains scientific observations; "scientific theories must be falsifiable"

And just in case you need it, the definition of falsifiable:

falsifiable: capable of being tested (verified or falsified) by experiment or observation

These are the definitions science has been using for centuries. They're meanings are firmly established and accepted by the world's scientific community. In fact, they're the very basis of science itself.

So... no, Ms. Joni Burgin, I hate to break the news to you, but "creationism" is simply NOT a science, and it cannot be taught as such.

I expect this kind of thing in Georgia. But Wisconsin?

Then again, after reading something like this - in Wired Magazine no less - perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised.
