So, today's prediction... Scandal... Sometime in the next 4 years, something is going to break that will end the use of the suffix "gate", replacing it with... Well, my crystal ball only goes so far. But mark my words, it will be replaced.
Yes yes, I know. Most of the major media outlets have been cowed into submission by the right. It's a brilliant tactic, railing on about the 'liberal media' for so long that the media becomes scared of its own 'liberal' shadow. But out there, somewhere, is a young enterprising journalist looking to make a name for themselves. It won't be easy, getting thru the veil of secrecy imposed by this administration. But it can be done.
For 4 years the media has been afraid of challenging Bush. After all, to do so would be unpatriotic. But after a year long election in which criticizing the President was the central theme, that taboo has been obliterated, opening the door to new possibilities.
Some of the dots are already visible. Valerie Plame. Abu Gharib. Haliburton's accounting scandals. Haliburton's no-bid contracts. Voter suppression efforts in Florida and Ohio. Tom DeLay's various indictments and investigations. Ahmed Chalabi and his ties to Iran. A.Q. Khan's nuclear network and our lack of response. bin Laden's escape at Tora Bora. The decision not to strike at Abu Musab al-Zarqawi prior to the Iraq invasion. The failure to secure weapons and nuclear materials in the aftermath of the invasion. I could go on, but you get the point.
And these are just the dots that are visible. Imagine - just imagine - the ones that are not. Connect them, and well... If I were an enterprising young journalist, that's what I'd be thinking about...
