CIVIL WAR

Looks like both Brent Scowcroft, the former national security adviser to President Bush's father, and Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was national security adviser to President Carter, both believe we may be headed for civil war in Iraq. In fact Scowcroft thinks we may be witnessing its beginning right now. And unfortunately, he thinks elections at the end of the month may only make things worse.

Given that today we learned...

that the Iraqi government has had to extend it's current state of emergency until after the elections,

that the commander of American ground forces in Iraq today admitted that significant areas of 4 of Iraq's 18 provinces - all within the Sunni heartland - are still not secure enough for citizens to vote, saying:

``I can't guarantee that every person in Iraq that wants to vote, goes to a polling booth and can do that safely,'' Metz said. ``We're going to do everything possible to create that condition for them, but we are fighting an enemy who cares less who he kills, when he kills and how he kills. A delay in the elections just gives the thugs and terrorists more time to continue their intimidation, their cruelty, their brutal murders of innocent people.''

and that today was the deadliest day in over a month for US forces, with 9 casualties...

I suspect he may indeed be right.
