HEAD FOR THE HILLS!

Way to start strong, George. Way to start strong!

Here's a quick rundown of the day's top stories. I'll grab the headline and lead graf from each:

Powerful Republicans Worry About Bush Budget Cuts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's proposed spending cuts drew worried criticism on Tuesday from the Republican heads of congressional budget committees, and key party members said his priorities were not binding.

Key phrase: "not binding." Translation? We're going to ignore you Mr. President.

Democrats, Labor Say Bush Amtrak Plan May Backfire

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A White House proposal to end subsidies for Amtrak and possibly push it into bankruptcy could backfire and disrupt train travel for millions of commuters, congressional and labor officials said on Tuesday.

How'd that government shutdown go for you guys last time? Wanna go down that road again? Be my guest. And be prepared to get hammered.

WHouse Balks at Submitting Social Security Plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has told lawmakers it has no immediate plans to submit its own detailed proposal to Congress for overhauling Social Security, sources briefed by the administration said on Tuesday.

No plan to submit? It's less than a week after the State of the Union, and smack in the middle of your coast-to-coast tour, and you're already running scared?

Asbestos Bill Hits More Snags, Lawmakers Say

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate plan to create a $140 billion asbestos compensation fund hit more snags this week as support sagged among the Republican majority, lawmakers said on Tuesday.

Another State of the Union pet project going down in flames. I wonder - did the disclosure that you're trying to cover Cheney's ass hurt your effort in any way? This one had to has to thrill John Edwards with his whole "david vs. goliath" thing.

Now... all that would be enough by itself to qualify as a bad day. But dig a little deeper and you start finding even more.

Like, for example, the possibility that the Bush admin has allowed a partisan shill without any real media credentials into the White House press corps in order to provide themselves with someone they can fall back on to lob propaganda softballs in times of trouble. And that this shill, operating under a false name, seems to have among other things registered a number domain names aimed at, hold for it... wait for it... gay men with a military fetish! Which would be bad enough for our friends on the far righthand side of the aisle under normal circumstances, but...

Given the wingnuts decision to take the anti-gay marriage fight to our neghbors to the north

OTTAWA - Powerful U.S. religious groups are sending money and support to allies in Canada to fight same-sex marriage.

Patrick Korten, vice-president of communications for the Knights of Columbus head office in New Haven, Conn., said no limit has been set on the help his organization is prepared to offer.

"Whatever it takes," he said. "The family is too important."

combined with a growing focus on the activities of the corporations that provide massive financial support for the "party of moral values"

From David Sirota: The Republican Party likes to call itself the party of "moral values." So the question is, will it return the tens of thousands of dollars it has pocketed from companies that air pornography?

As reported by the LA Times today, "Adelphia Communications Corp. has quietly become the nation's only leading cable operator to offer the most explicit category of hard-core porn."

According to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, Adelphia gives the overwhelming amount of its financial support to Republicans, the party of "moral values." The company has given more than $100,000 to the GOP in soft money contributions, and thousands more in PAC contributions, and contributions from the company's executives. This money has gone to people like President Bush and Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), one of the most outspoken moralizers in the Senate.

Well... Mr. President... how's that second term coming along?
