SCANDAL

Raw Story has a HUGE ONE today. Here's the headline:
Exclusive: Social Security scam letters helped fund $134,000 in trips for GOP House leader Tom DeLay - Medicare scare letters also used to raise money for group

It's just amazing. Roughly a decade ago Gingrich and his "revolutionaries" rode in to town on a quest to clean up Congress. As bad as some of the Dems had been, this is far, far worse.

What's more amazing though is how obviously stupid these violations are. The charges that Texas prosecutor Ronnie Earle is currently investigating are serious, but at least in that case there is the hint of a gray area. It might be an infinitesimally small hint of a gray area, but... But here? DeLay had over $134,000 in travel expenses illegally paid for by a lobbying group that is scamming the elderly! Forget that I disagree with this man and his politics - just on the basis of sheer stupidity he should be removed from office.

But of course if stupidity disqualified a person from holding office, this idiot would have to go too:

Now we know where Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas) thinks the weapons of mass destruction are buried: in Syria, which he said he'd like to nuke to smithereens.

Speaking at a veterans' celebration at Suncreek United Methodist Church in Allen, Texas, on Feb. 19, Johnson told the crowd that he explained his theory to President Bush and Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas) on the porch of the White House one night.

Johnson said he told the president that night, "Syria is the problem. Syria is where those weapons of mass destruction are, in my view. You know, I can fly an F-15, put two nukes on 'em and I'll make one pass. We won't have to worry about Syria anymore."

The crowd roared with applause.

I don't know what's worse: that a sitting member of the US Congress thinks its a good idea to start a nuclear war with Syria, that he was stupid enough to say this out loud, or that the group he said it to roared with applause.

I'll say it again. That is not my America.
