From today's new CBS News poll on the Terri Schiavo case:

WHY DO YOU THINK CONGRESS GOT INVOLVED? They care about Terri Schiavo 13% Trying to advance political agenda 74% Congress' involvement in the case may have damaged the public’s view of that institution. In this poll, 34 percent approve of the way Congress is handling its job, down from 41 percent last month, while 49 percent now disapprove, up from 44 percent last month. This is the lowest approval rating Congress has received since December 1997, in the wake of Congressional hearings into Democratic fundraising practices.

I wonder. Do you think statements like this from House Majority Leader Tom DeLay might have something to do with that perception?

DeLay told a conservative Christian group that the Schiavo case was a gift from God for their cause, drawing fresh complaints from Democrats that he was trying to score political points. "One thing that God has brought to us is Terri Schiavo to elevate the visibility of what's going on in America," the Texan congressman told a meeting of the Family Research Council.

This poor woman and her entire family have had their lives ripped apart over this and DeLay considers it a "gift from God." Believe it or not it actually gets worse:

"This is exactly the issue that's going on in America, the attacks against the conservative movement, against me and against many others."

Thats right Tom, it's all about you! You you YOU!

According to that same CBS poll, 82% of the nation disagrees with you on this one, but somehow, somehow... it's an attack against you and the conservative agenda.

For years you and your party have been shoveling this line, and for years the media and the public have been eating it up. But on this on, well... the numbers don't lie, do they, Tom? But here's the thing. You're finally the party in power. You control all the levers of government. There is no "liberal elite" to blame this on, no "runaway liberal judge." In fact, you've shoveled so deep on this even your own supporters can't stand the smell.

And here's the thing, Tom. Your ethical problems aren't going away. In fact they just seem to get worse and worse. And now, even your own people are running scared. Odd that you'd pick now to drop your guard and let the nation see just what a crass and disgusting political opportunist you really are.

Let me once again reiterate my previous prediction. There is a civil war brewing within the Republican Party. There are still some who understand, who remember what the party once stood for.

The party of "limited government" has moved to intervene in the life and death decision of a single family. The party that "stands in defense of marriage" has voted to come between a husband and wife in the most personal moment imaginable. The party that shouts from the hilltops that it "stands for state's rights" has ignored the long history of the state speaking clearly and decisively on this issue. The party of "moral values" has decided that its morals are the ones we must all live and die by.

The voice of the "Silent Majority" quite literally has become the voice of a "Vocal Minority." And not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that one issue could ever display that so clearly.

America - are you listening? Do you hear? Can you see? This is not an aberration. Its not a fluke. This is what the Republican Party has become. This is what they stand for. Their own leaders don't even attempt to deny it. Can you see? Will you finalyl understand?

"Out of the mainstream" is the phrase they've used to attack us for years. "Out of the mainstream":

Let this woman rest. Let her go. Allow her the peace she deserves.
