The good folks over at The American Prospect held a contest last February that asked readers to come up with a short, single sentence definition of what liberalism stands for. The results are in, and a neighbor of mine, Todd Washburn of Brookline, Mass, took home the prize with this entry:
--------
| Liberals believe our common humanity endows each of us, individually, with the right to freedom, self-government, and opportunity; and binds all of us, together, in responsibility for securing those rights. |
Spot on, Todd. Spot on.
Looking for a longer definition? Check the sidebar for good ones from Clinton and Kennedy. But for an "elevator pitch" I'm not sure Todd's can be beat.
