| Just 42% of Americans say their representative deserves to be re-elected, while a 45% plurality calls it time for someone new. When Americans are asked which party they want to control Congress after the 2006 elections, Democrats hold a 47%-40% edge -- the party's best showing since the Journal/NBC survey began asking that question in 1994. |
Perhaps the doom and gloom of my previous post was unwarranted, no? Perhaps... just perhaps... no matter how this Filibuster fight turns out this will all work out in the end.
Step one in any realignment is the old order losing legitimacy. Looks like we're getting to that point fast. And yeah, this filibuster fight is surely brining that along nicely. The very same things that have been most depressing about the past six months are the same ones that are driving this trend. Would I prefer things weren't falling apart like this? Of course. But as one of my fellow BU travelers constantly argued last fall, sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better. Clearly things are getting worse.
Step two (to vastly oversimplify things here) is when they get better. This is when a new leader steps forward to challenge the old order and forge a new dominant coalition. Right now I have absolutely no idea who that will be. But 2008 is still a long, LONG way away. And something tells me there will be plenty of opportunities for us to find out.
