First up, a post coming that directly tags the "when it comes, it will come from the west" theme of this blog. Eventually, the Democratic Party will realize that fighting like this is the road that takes them back into the majority:
| In other words, what we have in Montana right now is the exact opposite of what we have in Washington. Democrats are showing guts, playing offense and fixing problems. Republicans, meanwhile, are running around crying. Even more hilariously, the best attacks they've been able to come up with against Democrats is that Gov. Schweitzer wears jeans (not exactly what I would perceive to be a liability in this state). This is the model Democrats should be working off of: stand up, fight, take no prisoners - and win. |
It's a common theme really. Fight for the truth, fight for what's right, and you'll win more than you lose. Fail to fight, however, and you're virtually guaranteed to lose.
Then, as if on cue, a second post that shows the Democratic leadership in the House doing just that - fighting. Or rather, announcing that they will punish members who break ranks and fail to fight for core principles. Huge:
| Roll Call has a new report up about House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D) holding an emergency meeting of the House Democratic Steering Committee tonight to discuss formal sanctions against the 15 Democrats who sold out their party and voted for the corporate-written Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Pelosi raised "the likelihood that defectors' committee assignments would be reviewed at tonight’s meeting of the Steering Committee." That's absolutely necessary - why should Democrats who undermine their party be given plum committee assignments over other, far more loyal and principled Democrats? Pelosi should be commended for her courage - and now she needs to back up her words with action. |
Too often in the past Dems have been allowed to break ranks on big votes. Anyone remember the bankruptcy bill? From time to time, party discipline is more important than allowing individual members to vote their conscience. After all, its not as if they're prevented from voting a certain way if they feel they must. They can do so, but there must be consequences. After all, one of the critical differences between an independent and an aligned politician is that they are supported by a massive party infrastructure. But that support should, in fact must, go both ways. Its about time the Democratic leadership woke up and realized that.
