Western Democrat links to an interesting post by Tom Knapp about the coming collapse of the GOP coalition. What caught my eye was this quote:

And in 2008, they can run the table, especially if they nominate a relatively pro-freedom candidate -- probably a western governor like New Mexico's Bill Richardson, Arizona's Janet Napolitano or even Brian Schweitzer of Montana -- for the presidency.

"Pro-freedom." I like that. Reagan's realignment in 1980 was based in large part on that idea. In his time it was the idea that big government was the problem, not the solution, and that only Republicans could be counted on to ensure government remained small. After 25+ years of experience showing otherwise, a "pro-freedom" ideology is precisely what will drive a Western realignment.
