I saw this yesterday but ignored it because, well... I know this has happened a lot this week, but I have no idea what to say.

The Pentagon is organizing a march in DC from the Pentagon building itself to the Mall to "remember" 9/11 and veterans of the Iraq war. Forget for the moment that those two things have nothing to do with one another. Instead, answer me this - Why is the Pentagon organizing a rally on the mall? And why does an event designed to help us remember the fallen end with a country music concert? Wouldn't a long moment of silence be more appropriate?

UPDATE: And because that isn't enough, the Pentagon is now doing its own polling in Iraq, and... surprise! It shows the Iraqi people unified in opposition to the insurgency! But that's not actually what bothers me about this. What bothers me is how pathetically stupid the methodology behind the poll is. It was taken of people calling in to the Tips Hotline, a number set up for citizens to report information about suspected insurgents. So... yeah... people who don't like insurgents, what? They don't like insurgents? News flash!

Actually, now that I think about it, that's not what bothers me most either. What REALLY bothers me is that despite its idiotic methodology, the mainstream media will probably pick up the info and report it as fact. Ugh.

UPDATE II: I was annoyed by this whole idea of a 9/11 "march." But wow... Wolcott is really upset. And Gillard? Well, here's a small taste:

These people idea of America is alien to what I was raised to believe. They think this is appropriate? The shitstorm which is coming their way will be quite impressive. And there will be one. Once the NY papers pick up on this, the screeching will be quite loud. Disgusted isn't the word for this. Violated, maybe. Ashamed, another. Wow. Oh yeah, Clint Black should roast in hell for participating in this monstrosity. Why not piss on some graves instead?

I must say I think he's spot on about the reaction from the NY papers. My guess is it won't matter what paper, they will all come down on this, and come down hard. A country music concert on the National Mall to honor the dead? If nothing else, it shows Rove has lost complete control of the White House machine. This idea is so stupid, so tone deaf, so idiotic, there's absolutely no way he would ever have let it move forward. But here it is, so...
