WHAT REAGAN BUILT...

...let Bush tear asunder.

Apparently Bush thought that he could pick one of his best buddies for the Supreme Court and that the radical right would go right along. Erm... No. Kudos to Kevin Drum for pulling together such a great highlight reel.

My favorite?

Stephen Bainbridge: I got a lot of criticism for saying that George Bush was pissing away the conservative moment via his Iraq policies. Even then, however, I continued to support Bush precisely because I thought we'd get a couple of solid Scalia or Thomas-style conservatives on the Supreme Court. I was wrong. With this appointment, I'd echo Andrew's sentiment with something a tad more off color: Bush is now peeing on the movement.

Ouch. Click thru for the full report. The natives aren't just restless; they're in full revolt!

And yes, in case you're wondering, that makes Harry Reid's almost immediate support of the appointment make much, MUCH more sense. You have to wonder... everyone knows Bush's weakness for cronies. Which naturally leads to some speculation:

Did Reid set a trap for Bush on this one?

Or was it Miers herself who lay the bait?

The more I learn, the more I think my previous comment may have been premature. Of course I still have no idea how she would act as a judge, but hopefully that's something we'll learn in the coming months. Between Roberts' free pass and the growing anger from the right, my guess is that she's in for a tough road. But we'll see....

UPDATE: Want more evidence on the conservative coalition crackup? Check this out. I'd quote the revolting natives again, but Billmon does them one better:

Meanwhile the hardcore Bush loyalists kinda have their backs pressed up against the wall, with big, round, white eyes -- like a bunch of guards in an asylum for the violently insane who've just realized the Thorazine shots aren't working any more.

And yes, as he points out Bush and his brain have even lost Limbaugh on this one. Check this:

I won't say "depresses" me, but people have been working, folks, in the conservative movement for however long you want to go back, 50 years, 30 years, 20 years intently to get to the point here where the opportunity to reshape the court and to take it in a clear originalist direction and to weaken the court as structured by the left, as I've said over and over again, the court is the last refuge for the left. It is where they hope to institutionalize their beliefs and get their beliefs out of the arena of debate. They want liberalism to be institutionalized, made a part of the Constitution so that the American people have no opportunity to debate it, oppose it, elect congressmen and senators to debate it and oppose liberalism and defeat it. The more it gets institutionalize at the highest courts of the land, the greater the chances are that we're stuck with it. Now, all this having been said, the caveat to this is: I don't know this woman. I have no idea. She could end up being fabulous for all anybody knows. That takes me back to, "Why do we have to take the risk? Why do we have to roll the dice?" And some of you say, "Well, Rush, trust the president. The president said he was going to do this, and he's picked a person here that he firmly believes in." Yeah, I know. You want to trust the president. You do, but, folks, there have been too many things that... You look at all the spending. I mean, where is conservatism in the way this government has grown in the last five years? It's not evident. So there's a lot of things here to have a red flag raised about.

Sure, maybe he'll get back on board tomorrow. But you cannot underestimate the power of the initial doubt. You simply cannot. If Rush gives his nutters permission to doubt, well, all bets are off.

And then there's this from the uber-conservative American Spectator via the Moose:

"There is now talk of among some conservatives about a filibuster of the Miers nomination. Never mind the Al Gore donations or the money that was floated to the DNC when Miers was a managing partner in a law firm, those can be explained away as "good for the business of the firm...

All that talk about the judicial filibuster threatening our way of life, the constitution, and god himself? Yeah. Not so much. Amazing how easy it is to stand on principle when things are going your way, isn't it?

All of which makes me wonder... what exactly are these guys so scared of? Everyone - and I do mean everyone - on the right that's screaming is screaming about fear and weakness. Sure, Bush is weak right now, but Cheney is (excuse me while I recover from having to type these words) right, at least about this one thing: Bush has never been one to back down from a fight. If anything his problem has been precisely the opposite. Which makes me wonder...

Does Bush, Rove, Cheney & Co know what's coming down the unindicted co-conspiritor pike? After all, if they did indeed commit crimes, they would have been the first to know....

UPDATE II: Five minutes and I've already found evidence that Rush's questioning of Bush has unleashed forces beyond his control. Amazing.

UPDATE III: Looks like Sully has been trolling the rightwing blogs, and well, read for yourself what they've been saying:

Bush lied to us. Let Kos cheer. The post below should not get lost, that her name was on a list of acceptables supplied by the Democrats. Bush is a gutless, abortionist liar. I spit on him. Seriously.

And more:
I cannot believe that I ever trusted this man. I am such a fool. I cannot believe that I have been so foolish as to look past the open borders, the excessive spending, the support of moderate Senators over Conservatives, the nation building in Iraq, the twisted bankruptcy "reform," etc.

My favorite:
could have picked a real conservative. instead, he picks a 60-year-old woman who's never been married and has never had kids. are we really to believe that she'll vote to overturn roe? are we to believe that this woman hasn't had sex outside of marriage over the past several decades? and if she has, hasn't she been counting on the right to abortion just as other career-oriented women do? bush has betrayed us. i will never again contribute to the republican party.

Coming out of the last election I hoped for one of two things. Either Bush would overreach right (a la Terri Schiavo), letting the middle of this country see his true face, or he'd do something that made the religious right see that no matter what they might have told themselves he's never really been one of them. What I never, never ever expected was a two-fer. Never.
