| "There is a general agreement about the fact that citizenship in this country should not be bestowed on people who are the children of folks who come into this country illegally," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.
Birthright citizenship, or what critics call "anchor babies," means that any child born on U.S. soil is granted citizenship, with exceptions for foreign diplomats. |
I can't speak for the rest of you, but I know I don't agree. This nation was built by immigrants. When they arrived they weren't citizens. But they put down roots and whether they became citizens or not their children were born Americans. That's our story. That's how we got here. That's who we are.
But history aside, what purpose would this change serve? Is it going to reduce the flow of illegal immigrants? That's doubtful. Citizenship is certainly important, but isn't economic opportunity what is really driving most illegals to enter the country? So how exactly would this address that problem?
UPDATE: And as The Carppetbagger reminds us, there's that teenie weenie little issue of the 14th Amendment to deal with.
