| "It's like it's twilight in America," says one frustrated conservative. |
Reagan didn't buy it, and neither did the nation. Thus, the "Morning in America" Reagan realignment.
It's coming. And even the Republicans themselves are starting to see it.
UPDATE: Somehow I missed this bit in this article. Discussing Rove's potential departure from the administration, Time Magazine says this:
| If he leaves, he will not be alone. Several well-wired Administration officials predict that within a year, the President will have a new chief of staff and press secretary, probably a new Treasury Secretary and maybe a new Defense Secretary. |
See my previous post about the need for members of Congress to get out in front on this. If its true fror them, it's 1000x more true for this president. He had a moment - the day of the indictment of Libby - to take fast, decisive action. To lead. But he didn't. Eventually the day of reckoning will come. But the longer he waits, the more it looks like his had was forced, the worse it is going to be for him. A few days back, I half jokingly suggested that Bush should take up Wilkerson's "cabal" claim and pin this entire thing on Cheney. I doubt if it would work, but it may be the only chance he has. The longer he waits, however, the more his hand is forced, the less likely that approach would work.
I am standing by my previous prediciton: if Wilkerson's claims are validated, they will bring this entire administration down. Unless, of course, the president can find a way to separate himself from what Wilkerson described as "the cabal." I honestly cannot see how that would be possible - after all, that would be one hell of a "I was clueless" defense, but in politics you must always remember to never say never. But if that defense is possible - and that's a big if - the only way it would work is if you did it well before it was necessary. Will Bush do that? No. And would it work if he did? I doubt it. But aside from that I don't see any way out. If, of course, what Wilkerson says is true. Stay tuned...
UPDATE II: Continuing on the Powell/Wilkerson thread... Think for a moment how today's NYT story plays into this. If it was known within the administration that the man responsible for much of the pre-war WMD intelligence was a liar, who was it known by? Did Powell know?
Given that he has said he now consideres his pre-war presentation to the UN on WMD to be one the greatest regrests in a long career, I would suspect that the answer is no. If that is true, if Powell did not know there was substantial evidence that the evidence he was using was based on lies but others in the administration did, it means that members of the administration were lying to one another. And for Powell, i means they lied to him precisely so that he would go out and lie to the world.
Powell needs to speak. He needs to do it now. As a soldier, loyalty is everything to this man. I understand that. But if the evidence shows that they lied to him so that he would lie to the world, he needs to speak. He is a soldier. His loyalty is to his country, not his party, and not his administration.
Speak, Sec. Powell. Your nation needs to know what you know. It needs the truth.
