If it weren't for my insane end of semester schedule these past few weeks there are a ton of posts I would have written. Mostly its just too late now - the time has past, the inspiration has gone. Thankfully, Kevin Drum has written one on torture that perfectly captures what I wanted to say about the odd support state sponsored torture has gained from those on the right.

Conservatives, historically speaking, don't believe in big government because they don't believe humans can be trusted with power over one another. The temptation to abuse it is just to great. And for a long, LONG time, they used as examples of their argument authoritarian regimes like Soviet Russia as examples of what they meant. So it says something about how badly awry things have gone for the conservative movement that they now support a policy that would permit our government to torture people. It's simply baffling. And its yet more evidence that we're due for a serious realignment.
