CHALLENGES TO ROE V WADE ON THE MARCH

Since Alito's confirmation, it seems everyone wants to get in on the rush to overturn Roe. It's almost as if these people think there's a prize up for grabs for the state that can prove its the most insane.

First there was South Dakota. They jumped out in front with a move to ban virtually all abortions by sending to prison those doctors who perform them. They claim it's about the "health and safety" of the woman, of course, but the law itself says otherwise:

Proposed amendments to the law to create exceptions to specifically protect the health of the mother, or in cases of rape or incest, were voted down. Also defeated was an amendment to put the proposal in the hands of voters.

I like how they don't even trust their own citizens to vote on the matter. And then, this gem:

The South Dakota law concludes that life begins at conception based on medical advances over the past three decades.

Medical advances? The moment life begins has been altered by medical advances? If that's true, wouldn't it mean in vitro fertilization should also be illegal? Numerous embryos are created and destroyed in the process. If life begins at conception, what's the difference?

Not to be outdone, Mississippi has stepped up with their own plan, edging ahead of SD with a ban that makes no exceptions for rape or incest. As Jane points out, its nice to see a state looking out for the parental rights of rapists and child molesters.

But Utah isn't fazed. In the race towards the abyss, Utah just took a commanding lead. Daughters seeking to abort a pregnancy caused by their father will be able to seek permission from a judge to allow the procedure, but the law would nevertheless require the father be informed. Because, once again, the rights of a rapist must be protected at all times apparently. Think that's not enough to give them a commanding lead? Think again. Digby says:

If more of these people would admit what they really believe we could have an honest debate in this country:
West Jordan Republican Sen. Chris Buttars scoffed at McCoy's suggestion that the legislation might force teens to other states for abortions or into their bathrooms to attempt the procedure on themselves.

"Abortion isn't about women's rights. The rights they had were when they made the decision to have sex," Buttars said. "This is the consequences. The consequence is they should have to talk to their parents."

[...]One of these fine leaders puts it this way:

"There is a life inside of this life. And how that life is taken care of is very important to me," said Sen. Darin Peterson, R-Nephi.

How the life it's inside of is taken care of --- not so much. That life apparently gave up any claim to being cared for when she allowed her father to rape her.

The battle on this is coming, and its going to be big. My guess? This is all going to backfire on the right. And yes, its about damn time.
