Underworld, the legendary electronic music group that influenced an entire generation of electronic musicians like myself, have once again shown they know how to utterly obliterate boundaries and destroy conventions. Underworldlive.com is their new (to me at least) website, and through it you can purchase new music that will only see release online. The packages often include multimedia components designed by Tomato, their amazing design workshop, and sell for as little as 5 pounds. They see it as a new way to bypass the industry and get straight to their fans. Nothing new, I suppose, except that both the execution of the idea and the product are amazing. Once you've registered as a member of the site, you can also download live sets for free that were taken straight from the desk. I'm downloading literally everything on the site as I type this. I'll be back by the end of the weekend with a full review.
But c'mon, its Underworld. These guys aren't just one of the best electronic music bands ever, they're one of the best bands ever, period. And their live shows? Good god. There's nothing like them. Take the idea of a jam band, but give them the power of a 909 kick and a portable digital audio workstation, and the result is just mind-blowing. Why Darren Emerson decided to leave the group will always be utterly incomprehensible to me.
