Whenever I need a good laugh, I turn to SantorumExposed.com. Our boy Ricky has quite a way with words. Today is no exception:

Rick Santorum spoke to the conservative Pennsylvania Leadership Conference last night. During his address he spoke about faith in the United States and compared it to the role of faith in western Europe. Here's what Rick claims is happening to western Europe because of secularism, "Those cultures are dying. People are dying. They're being overrun from overseas... and they have no response. They have nothing to fight for. They have nothing to live for." On the other hand according to Rick, "More people go to church on Sunday in America than go to all of the sporting events in America held in a year combined." We're not sure where that statistic comes from or what it means, but Rick seems to find it reassuring. Here's the video:

He's literally just making stuff up. More people go to church on Sunday than "all the sporting events in America held in a year combined?" Really? I'd love to know how he came up with that one.

But the Europe is dying bit is just priceless. "They have nothing to live for," says Ricky. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

UPDATE: I'll do anything to procrastinate. First, a bit of background on the academic debate over the true number of Americans who attend church each week. Although 40% claim to go, it appears only about 20% actually do. Using data form the Census Dept, there were roughly 220 million adults in the US in 2004, making for roughly 44 million people in church each week. In 2005, according to Major League Baseball, attendance hit a record 75 million. So by itself, baseball shreds Santorum's ridiculous claim. Add in all of the other major leagues, minor leagues, college, high school, and intramural leagues, and well... My guess is that sporting event attendance beats church attendance by a factor of at least 20:1. And that's being very, very conservative. If he had been making a week to week comparison it would be one thing. But he wasn't. So there you go...
