Today:
The NSA wiretapping takes a dramatic new turn (if you don't think they are already wiretapping domestic calls without warrants you are delusional), we find out Bush may have directly authorized the release of classified information during a time of war for political purposes, Tom DeLay sends thugs to attack old ladies at his former opponent's campaign rally, the long lost "Gospel of Judas" that should (but won't) force a reconsideration of Christian dogma has been translated and released by National Geographic, Kerry introduces a resolution calling for withdrawal by the end of the year, the Senate reaches a historic compromise on immigration that threatens to shatter the coalition that Reagan built, Bush falls to dramatic new lows in the latest FoxNews poll while getting a serious smackdown from citizen Harry Taylor of N. Carolina at a political rally (you really MUST watch the video, both for what is said and how Bush responds), Condi's latest trip to Iraq most likely backfires, she gets into a major league spat with Rumsfeld over her "mistakes were made... but I don't mean it literally" comment, while the military is refusing to provide protection to members of our own State Dept...
Oh, and via Andrews Sullivan, this excellent bit of analysis by Tiger Hawk on immigration:
| The question should not be whether we can keep out Mexicans, but what we should do about the rising Hispanic culture in this country? Can we create a system under which Mexican immigrants are happy to fly the Star-Spangled Banner, sing our songs, join us in our wars, think of Washington, Franklin, Jefferson and Adams as "founding fathers," and otherwise honor our great traditions? I think we can, but we have to let go of the twin sins of nativism and unthinking "multiculturalism" to do it. |
Current projections show that in 100 years hispanics will be the majority population in this country. Majority, as in greater than 50%. Tiger Hawk is spot on. It's time for a new approach.
Back tomorrow if time permits...
UPDATE: I was slightly off with my data on the hispanic population. In the year 2100, the US Census Bureau predicts that non-hispanic whites will make up 40% of the population, while white hispanics will be just 33%. And I can't find data for 2106. Given the projected growth rates, hispanics won't reach majority status until roughly the middle of the 22nd century. Nevertheless, the underlying point still stands.
