Another day of endless driving. This is now the fifth time I’ve crossed the Great Plains by car, but it never EVER ceases to amaze me just how GREAT they really are. If you haven’t ever done this drive, trust me… you have no idea what I’m talking about. And no, flying over this part of the country doesn’t even close to count.
So…. Endless flatness. And aside from a few random anecdotes, nothing exciting to report. Here they are, in no particular order.
Chicagoland has a cancer treatment center called “Cyberknife.” Cyberknife? Really? I know there was a point in time where adding “cyber” and “e-“ to everything was the cool thing to do, but cyberknife? And even worse, the advertisement was for laser treatment, so I’m not really sure what’s cyber about it.
Another bad moment in marketing, middle-America style. The motto for a steakhouse I saw along the way: “Come in. We’d really like to meat you.” I’m sorry, but that’s as bas as the Kum&Go gas stations in Colorado. It seems some people cannot even buy a clue.
Central Illinois has a truck stop called “Tiki Inn.” And it features a restaurant called the “Pinecone.” Maybe its just me, but I don’t see what those two things have to do with one another.
And last but not least… I understand why there are so many adult video stores near truck stops. I’m with them there. But why the need for so many lingerie stores as well. Do truckers really have an overwhelming and immediate need to purchase frilly underwear? Wait… never mind. Don’t answer that. Just take a look at this, the view from my hotel this evening:
