CEASE FIRE?

Via Andrew Sullivan, here's a fairly terrifying quote from Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani:

``Islamic nations will not forgive the entities that hinder a cease-fire,'' al-Sistani said in a clear reference to the United States.

``It is not possible to stand helpless in front of this Israeli aggression on Lebanon,'' he added. ``If an immediate cease-fire in this Israeli aggression is not imposed, dire consequences will befall the region.''

I understand the utopian desire for a "sustainable cease fire," but out here in the real world that idealism is having some very tragic consequences. And sure, our president may think that the absence of war in international relations is vastly overrated, but please... by what possible standard is a regional war in the Middle East going to accrue to our benefit?

Please wake me up when this nightmare is over. Please?
