County by county, district by district, the West is turning blue. You'd never know it if you from watching the national news media, but it is happening. And what's happening in Wyoming is a picture perfect example.
Back in 1978, Wyoming's seat in the House of Representatives switched from Democratic to Republican control. For those of you who are long-time readers of this blog, yes - that's right smack in the middle of the last major realignment out West. But now, for the first time in almost three decades, the seat is back in play. A virtual political unknown, Gary Trauner, has built a campaign quite literally from the ground up, pulling into a statistical dead heat with his Republican opponent, Barbara Cubin. And even more incredibly, he outraised his opponent in the last quarter, with nearly 4/5 of his contributions coming from individuals.
But that's not even the best part. Back in 1978, when the district realigned itself, do you know the name of the man who won that race? Dick Cheney. The seat the sitting VP once realigned is now back in play. You want symbolism? A victory in this district would make for one hell of a symbol.
