Earlier today I mentioned Condi's quote about the "false promise" that is peace. I was so taken aback by the comment that I missed something she said a bit later that was even worse. From the WaPo article on the press conference:

But she added, "The Israelis have said that they have no desire to widen this conflict, and I take them at their word that they have no desire to widen this conflict."
She said that while Lebanon's "young democratic government" was trying to assert control over Lebanese territory, the "extremists" of Hezbollah "want to strangle it in its crib." She said that in a sense "what we're seeing here [are] the birth pangs of a new Middle East." |
So its not just that peace would be a "false promise." Its that violence itself is good.
These people are insane. I don't know how else to put it. The Middle East is in chaos, and anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a fantasy world. And by definition, chaos cannot be controlled. And yet somehow, these people act as if this entire process can be "managed" for our long term good.
It's unbelievable. These people are supposed to be "conservatives." They're supposed to believe in the fallibility of human beings and human endeavours. They're supposed to be opposed to efforts to manage the outcome of history. That was, after all, one of the central tenets of communism against which they once so vigorously fought. But now... now they think they can manage the outcome of religious and social conflict in the Middle East? What is wrong with these people?
