As Mr. Bush squeezed through tables at a pancake house where he ate breakfast, , a waitress asked, “Mr. President, are you going to turn your back on me?”“No, ma’am,” he replied, with a laugh and a pause. “Not again.”
For the record... Although its nice the president returned to New Orleans and said all the right things, words are utterly meaningless if they are not backed up with action. And the above quote, together with the one below, makes it clear that Bush recognizes that so far the response has not nearly been anything close to sufficient.
Disasters and wars are different in many respects, but there's one thing they most definitely both have in common. There are no do-over's, no mulligan's. Either you get it right when it matters, or you don't get it right at all.
“I’ve come back to New Orleans to tell you the words that I spoke on Jackson Square are just as true today as they were then,” he told a largely friendly audience at Warren Easton Senior High School, referring to his major nighttime address on the storm last September.
If the words had been followed with action, there would be no need to resort to this sort of rhetoric. The actions would speak for themselves.
