Greg Sargent calls our attention to a new poll of Virginia voters. An odd result:

Do you think the incident will help? Or hurt Senator Allen's chances for reelection? Or will it have no effect?

7% Help
46% Hurt
46% No Effect
1% Not Sure

**

Do you think the incident will help? Or hurt Senator Allen's chances of running for President of the United States?

8% Help
61% Hurt
30% No Effect
1% Not Sure

That's a 15% difference between those who think it will hurt locally and those who think it will hurt nationally. What, I wonder, does this say about what the voters of Virginia think about themselves? Do they believe they are more forgiving, or is it that they think racial slurs and other personal attacks matter less at home than around the nation?

Very odd.

UPDATE: And then, there's this: Rassmussen shows Webb has cut Allen's lead in half. 5 points. Striking distance.
