Let's See a Show of Hands this Morning [Cliff May]Who is for aggressive and secret initiatives to monitor terrorist groups and suspects, trace their finances, interrogate captured combatants thoroughly and detain combatants as long as necessary?
Wow, quite a lot of hands today - even in Connecticut. Thank you.
Maybe someone should explain to Cliff that it's not necessarily the process of hunting down terrorists we liberals object to, its the substance.
"Aggressive and secret initiatives to monitor terrorist groups and suspects?" I'm all for it. I just don't think we need to give up our constitution in the process.
"...trace their finances?" Ditto.
"...interrogate captured combatants thoroughly?" Sure thing. But we don't need to violate federal and international laws, let alone all of our moral and ethical codes, in the process. Besides, its well known that intelligence gained through torture is less reliable than that gained through more traditional methods.
And "detain combatants as long as necessary?" Again, I'm all for it. I just don't think that should be done outside the rule of law.
Odd that as a liberal all of my positions are ones once advocated by conservatives, isn't it?
All of which reminds me.... As tiring as it gets to be relentlessly mischaracterized by the other side, I suppose in the end that, assuming they really believe what they are saying, we really shouldn't mind it. So long as they refuse to see us as we are, rather than as they wish us to be, they'll never see us coming.
