Glenn Greenwald is right to remind us.... a major terror plot was foiled through the combined efforts of US and UK law enforcement, and on both sides of the pond it was done within all pre-existig legal structures. On our side, that meant obtaining warrants from the FISA court. You know, the one that is supposedly so broken that the President needs the authority to invent his own rules. That one.
And there's more... Digby:
The British and the Americans followed the laws of their respective countries that require warrants --- and the terrorist plot carried on using telephones and bank transfers long after it was "revealed" in the press that the government was tracking communications and financial transactions.
In other words, all those claims that exposing terrorist surveillance programs will undermine national security are demonstrably false. Even after 5 years of stories about US government efforts to hunt down terrorists, they are still out there using their phones, email, and bank accounts. And even more importantly, we still found them.
So yes, although it should go without saying, we can indeed protect the nation while still retaining all of our constitutional rights and protections.
