Via FoxNews and ThinkProgress, we learn the President of the United States has once again proclaimed that he's not terribly interested in capturing Osama bin Laden. As told by Fred Barnes, he's more interested in breaking up future terrorist plots.
Because, you know... the man who funded and organized the most successful terrorist attack in history on US soil couldn't possibly be working on a second such attack. Or something.
Leaving aside Bush's claim that catching him would require sending 100,000 special forces troops into the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan (watch the video - even the Fox News people seem baffled by this), I have to admit... I'm confused here...
Back on September 5, the president himself gave a speech in which he mentioned bin Laden 17 times. He even went so far as to compare him to Hitler and Lenin. For the record, Bush's own words:
History teaches that underestimating the words of evil and ambitious men is a terrible mistake. In the early 1900s, an exiled lawyer in Europe published a pamphlet called "What Is To Be Done?" -- in which he laid out his plan to launch a communist revolution in Russia. The world did not heed Lenin's words, and paid a terrible price. The Soviet Empire he established killed tens of millions, and brought the world to the brink of thermonuclear war. In the 1920s, a failed Austrian painter published a book in which he explained his intention to build an Aryan super-state in Germany and take revenge on Europe and eradicate the Jews. The world ignored Hitler's words, and paid a terrible price. His Nazi regime killed millions in the gas chambers, and set the world aflame in war, before it was finally defeated at a terrible cost in lives.Bin Laden and his terrorist allies have made their intentions as clear as Lenin and Hitler before them. The question is: Will we listen? Will we pay attention to what these evil men say? America and our coalition partners have made our choice. We're taking the words of the enemy seriously. We're on the offensive, and we will not rest, we will not retreat, and we will not withdraw from the fight, until this threat to civilization has been removed. (Applause.)
As the transcript notes, 9 days ago these words won the president applause. But now, today... he says it isn't important to catch bin Laden? He has compared him to Hitler, and now, less than two weeks later, declared that his capture isn't relevant to the war.
Does this man understand the things that come out of his mouth? Does he remember anything he says? Bin Laden is Hitler. This is WWIII. And yet there is no need to capture bin Laden.
And somehow it is his opponents who are supposed to be the appeasers?
Will someone please - PLEASE - turn this into a campaign commercial. PLEASE?!?!
UPDATE: Atrios agrees. So does Digby. And Josh makes a great point: imagine the firestorm - particularly from "the liberal media" that would erupt if a Democrat said something so asinine.
Hang the president and his party with his own words. The man who masterminded 9/11 is not a priority for him. He's just not worried about him. Show the videotape. Run it 24x7 from now until November.
