Why anyone still thinks of McCain as a principled moderate or independent is utterly beyond me. Compared to his capitulation to Bush on torture, this story is really an insignificant matter. But then again, because acting evenhandedly here would have cost the man absolutely nothing, in some ways it might actually be worse. They report, you decide:
On Face The Nation yesterday, McCain vigorously condemned Chavez for his comparison of Bush to "the devil," but he refused to condemn Falwell for maintaining that Hillary Clinton is worse than "lucifer" himself. His excuse? Falwell was just joking around. Which, of course, is probably true, but ultimately is irrelevant.
Both Chavez and Falwell were idiots to say what they said, and there's no reason not to call them on it. Isn't that obvious?
