Some Questions For The President (UPDATED)

In your address to the nation last night, you said the following:

The war against this enemy is more than a military conflict. It is the decisive ideological struggle of the 21st century, and the calling of our generation. Our nation is being tested in a way that we have not been since the start of the Cold War.

You then continued with the following discussion of Iraq:

We will not leave until this work is done. Whatever mistakes have been made in Iraq, the worst mistake would be to think that if we pulled out, the terrorists would leave us alone. They will not leave us alone. They will follow us. The safety of America depends on the outcome of the battle in the streets of Baghdad. Osama bin Laden calls this fight "the Third World War" -- and he says that victory for the terrorists in Iraq will mean America's "defeat and disgrace forever." If we yield Iraq to men like bin Laden, our enemies will be emboldened; they will gain a new safe haven; they will use Iraq's resources to fuel their extremist movement. We will not allow this to happen. America will stay in the fight. Iraq will be a free nation, and a strong ally in the war on terror.

Granting you your premise for a moment... that this is in fact the "calling of our generation" and "the decisive ideological struggle of the 21st century"...

Why then have we fought the war with so few troops? Why have you not called for the total and complete mobilization of our society for war through the draft?

And if, as you say, Osama bin Laden is indeed committed to making this World War III, why is he still alive and making such claims five years after the event that began this war? Back in March of 2002 you proudly claimed that you "truly (are) not that concerned about him," but now he's starting WWIII? Which is it? And how long precisely are we supposed to wait before you bring him to justice?

You tell me constantly that I'm supposed to be safer because of the decisions you've made. But if bin Laden is planning WWIII, why then did you recently order the CIA unit focused on capturing him to disband? Shouldn't you be ordering more people to pursue him, not less?

Your actions, sir, do not match your words. A clash of civilizations cannot be fought on the cheap. It should be pursued with maximum effort, not just enough to barely get by. If this is so important, why isn't that reflected in your policies?

UPDATE: And one more question.... You've always said that you would give the commanders in Iraq the troops they need, and that should they request more, you would provide them. If this report is true, will you honor your promise and give them what they need?

U.S. Commanders in Iraq have privately expressed the need for an increase of three times the number of troops currently serving in Iraq, reports Michael Ware of CNN. Officially, the military continues to say that "we have an appropriate level of force to do what we have to do within the confines of our mission."

UPDATE II: Looks like I'm not the only one asking these sorts of questions.
