The Meme Spreads

Over the past 24 hours or so, I've written several posts comparing the president's rhetoric about the war to his conduct of it. My take certainly wasn't unique, and I've noted several times others who have made similar points.

Nevertheless, I'm surprised by just how quickly this has become the dominant meme for not just the speech, but for the adminstration's entire approach to the entire war itself. It's implied in this general's defense of the war, in this report on CNN, and most conspicuously, in href="http://www.crooksandliars.com/2006/09/13/jon-stewart-reaches-out-to-the-president-while-little-richard-gives-us-the-low-down/">this piece from The Daily Show last night.

Eventually people were bound to put two and two together. On the one hand, we're told we're in a war for civilization. On the other, we're told to go on living life as we always have. No need to sacrifice. No need to mobilize the nation for war. No need to do anything - except, I suppose, to remain in a state of fear.

It worked for a few years, but it was bound to collapse under its own weight eventually. My guess is that for this crew, the end is very, very near. Only thing is, they've got 2+ more years on their term. God help us.
