The President Is "Willing to Negotiate With Congress"

What a great phrase. This is, of course, the way our system of government is supposed to work, and yet somehow the NYT portrays it as a novel event.

The issue is detainee treatment and rights. Here's one of the areas under contention:

Senate Republicans said there were still several areas of contention between them and the administration, chiefly, a proposal to deny the accused the right to see classified evidence shown to the jury.

Once upon a time in the not so distant past, the right to a fair trial, to face those accusing you, and to see the evidence being presented was considered so fundamental a right that it was enshrined in our constitution. As such, it was considered one of the bedrock's of our society, one of the foundations on which everything we have was built. And in fact, the last time I checked, it was still there.

But never mind that. The current occupant of our White House finds that provision a hindrance to his efforts, and although he's been fine up until now to simply ignore it, he'd like to see his new approach made law.

Thankfully, the proud men and women who make up our JAG corps have refused to go along. They have stepped up, in a "time of war" no less, to tell the Commander in Chief that he is wrong. For that, we all owe them a debt of gratitude.
