On February 12, 2002, Al Gore delivered a now largely forgotten speech before the Council on Foreign Relations. Like Kevin, I don't agree with everything he says here - I find his adoption of the "Axis of Evil rhetoric particularly unsettling - but it is nevertheless an important reminder of what a more enlightened and thoughtful approach could have looked like. Things did not have to work out as they have. There was another path, one that in many places may yet still be open to us. Read the speech and judge for yourself.
