MCJoan is right. Part of the problem was a failure of both imagination and mobilization by those who oppose this administration's insane policies. Activism isn't simply an election day phenomenon; it is something that needs to happen each and every day.
A point to make about the politics wrought by the GOP. A filibuster wasn't off the table for minority leadership, but they simply did not have the votes to beat cloture. That's a failure on all our parts. We could not have imagined back when Hamdan was handed down that the resulting legislation would be as devestating as it is. That was a failure of imagination on all our parts. We could have been working for the past several months on building support and pressure in the Democratic caucus to do the right thing. We didn't. Now we go forward. Now we work toward electing a Congress that we won't be ashamed of.
Democracy doesn't happen on its own. It takes hard work and serious commitment. It is something in which we must all play a part on a daily basis, out of sense of respect for ourselves, for future generations, and for our ancestors who sacrificed so much to leave us the world in which we live.
The main thing is not to set out with grand projects. Everything starts at your doorstep. Just get deeply involved in something... You throw a stone in one place and ripples spread. -- Robert Moses
