I've been wondering when bin Laden would show up this election cycle. I expected his first appearance would be made on his own. Turns out I was wrong. It's the Republican Party who has brought him back.
For the record, the president has warned us repeatedly that we must take the words of our enemy seriously. Here is what they have said about Iraq:
The most important thing is that you continue in your jihad in Iraq, and that you be patient and forbearing, even in weakness, and even with fewer operations; even if each day had half of the number of current daily operations, that is not a problem, or even less than that. So, do not be hasty. The most important thing is that the jihad continues with steadfastness and firm rooting, and that it grows in terms of supporters, strength, clarity of justification, and visible proof each day. Indeed, prolonging the war is in our interest, with God’s permission.
Anyone out there want to place bets on when the next bin Laden tape will emerge? I'd put my money on a date less than 7 days before the midterms.
And if I were a candidate, I'd be ready to hit back hard:
"5 years later and bin Laden is still at large. If that doesn't prove we need new leadership in DC, nothing does."
