I feel like this is the 5,429th time I've seen a graph like this from The Heritage Foundation, but until people understand I'm going to continue posting. Via Andrew Sullivan, this:

The past four years have seen the sharpest growth in spending per household since the Johnson Administration, when the Great Society programs were enacted.
Andrew's correct to point out that that is only 1/2 of the story. Notice the trend in the 1990's? It's down. Under a Democratic president federal spending per household actually decreased. And then under unified Republican control it shot straight up. And no... for the record it had nothing to do with a "peace dividend." While mandatory spending went up under Clinton, it was discretionary spending that went down.
