The Empty Chair

I generally have little to no respect for local news media operations, but every once in awhile they really surprise me. Local media in Montana have been doing some fabulous work over the past few years, as have some in San Diego and Philly. Now it looks like we can add New York state that list.

Rep Sue Kelly (R-NY), under fire for her role in the Foley scandal, refused to even respond to an invitation to a debate held by the local chapter of the League of Women Voters. When confronted by local news media on the issue, she literally ran away from the cameras. But the debate was held anyway, and in her place the placed an empty chair. Take a look.

UPDATE: John Hall, her opponent in the race, was actually once a member of 1970's rock group Orleans, who had two enormous hits with "Dance With Me" and "Still the One." Yes, that's him in the middle:

And yes, this is him on The Colbert Report. Absolutely hilarious:

His handlers told him to put down the guitar and focus on politics. OK, fine, up to a point. It's one thing to tell someone not to highlight things that may distract from your political message, but its another thing entirely to tell someone to run away from their past. Its nice to see a politician who understands the difference.

Be yourself, and there's a chance voters might accept you. Be someone else, and eventually they will discover you are a fraud. Why is that so hard for people to understand?
