I was listening to Barack Obama on my hometown NPR station today, and for about the 5,000 time this month I heard someone make the claim that as a junior Senator, he has yet to do anything substantive.
I have to be honest: I'm really, REALLY sick and tired of hearing this claim. Because it is false. Fortunately, I don't have to take the time to compile all the information necessary to refute this absurd claim, because Hilzoy already has.
Please go read the post. Whether you support Obama, oppose him, or have no idea who he is, it is important to start with the facts, not the spin. The issues he has worked on may not be sexy, but they're all quite important. But don't take my word for it. Go find out for yourself.
UPDATE [01.25.08]: Given the amount of traffic this post continues to get from Google Search results, a bit of an update is in order.
On Jan 4, 2008, the Washington Post published a short but interesting article on Obama's legislative history.
On Jan 23, 2008, the Guardian did a nice compare-and-contrast of the voting records of Obama and Clinton.
I'll continue to add to this list as I come across interesting bits and bobs
UPDATE [02.15.08]: A very thorough update from Hilzoy here, comparing and contrasting the legislative records of Obama and Clinton during their time in the US Congress.
UPDATE [02.17.08]: Back again to Hilzoy at Obsidian Wings, who has just completed an extensive 3-part series examining the legislative records of Obama and Clinton.. Parts One, Two, and Three are there when you need them.
