An Update On Webb vs. Bush (Updated)

In case you missed the story earlier this week, George Will has decided to catch you up.

Only one problem: his portrayal of the event is, well... wrong. To paint Senator-elect Webb as a "boor," he conveniently left out the part where Bush was, well... an asshole. Kos has the details.

UPDATE: Over at Washington Monthly, Christina Larson, guest-posting for Kevin Drum, reminds Will of another important point: even during the campaign, Webb refused - quite deliberately - to talk about his son, and was clearly quite uncomfortable when others brought the subject up. If you followed Webb, you knew that.

Seems to me that if you have a family member serving in harms way right now, it is you, not the president or a pundit, who gets to decide what is and is not an appropriate question. It is you, and not the president or a pundit, who gets to decide what is and is not an appropriate response.

Given how often the president has turned to the "support the troops" line to stifle criticism of the war, you would think he would understand that, wouldn't you?

And besides, the man is the president, not the king. We owe him neither our allegiance nor our respect. Our country? Absolutely. But our president? Only so far as he has shown he deserves it. I seem to remember plenty of Clinton-era lectures to that effect...
