First You Win, Then You Govern

An important point to remember during this time of great political change.

Throughout our history, our politics follow a very clear pattern.

Ideological regimes establish themselves, govern for a time, but eventually collapse under the weight of their own inevitable internal contradictions. When that happens, power transfers to the opposition party not because of what they will do but because of who they are - or perhaps more accurately, who they are not.

First you win, then you govern. Realignments happen that way, and only that way. Reagan didn't win because people knew what he wold do. He won because of what he represented: he was the only alternative to Carter. Once in power, he proved he could govern. And the result was the massive Reagan realignment.

First you win, then you govern. The Dems have completed part one. The next two years will be about convincing the nation that yes, in fact, the Dems can govern. They do have an agenda, and it is one the nation will in large part embrace. When the nation begins to understand that... if the nation begins to understand that... 2008 very well may in fact be our next realignment.
