In Good Faith...

Matt makes a very important point. For all of you out there hoping that Bush finally moves to open negotiations with Iran and Syria, it is important to remember that negotiations in and of them selves are not what matter. Good faith negotiations, however, are. Anyone out there want to place bets on the likelihood of that happening?

Didn't think so.

Entering into bad faith negotiations will be as disastrous for this nation as bad faith governance has been. Conservatives came to power in the mid-1990s determined to prove that government doesn't work. If that's your goal, it's quite easy once in power to act in ways that guarantee that outcome. Thus, Katrina. And Iraq. And No Child Left Behind. And Medicare reform. And tax "reform." And...

I'd love to think we won't see that process repeated in the Middle East, but given everything I've learned over the past 6 years about these people, well...
