Rumsfeld Is Gone. My Impressions, In No Particular Order

The Bush administration is now in receivership. With Rumsfeld's replacement today by Bob Gates, the loyalists of 41 have risen up to reign in 43 in an effort to protect the legacy of the father from all of the damage done by the son. Gates was a deputy of Brett Scowkroft, one of 41's closesest friends and most important advisors. But until now, Scowkroft ha been absolutely shut out of this administration.

Bush essentially admitted to the nation today that he lied last week when he said Rumsfeld would remain for the duration of his administration. His excuse - and that is the only word that can be used to describe it - is that he had not yet talked to the man who will be replacing him. But as he himself admitted, he met with Gates on Sunday, not today, meaning that this was in the works before the election. Once the transcript is posted I'll provide his exact words so you can decide for yourself.

The era of neo-conservatism is over. The realists are now back in charge. If there remains any possibility of salvaging this disaster, it may now be within the realm of possibility for us to achieve it.

Dick Cheney no longer lies at the center of power in DC. The importance of that cannot be underestimated.

From a purely partisan perspective, the Democratic Party needs to begin today - no, now - to frame this shift by the president as a result of their electoral success. This change came because the Democratic Party nationalized the election and forced change. This is not a Republican victory. It is not a bipartisan victory. Own the frame and they will own the debate. They have about 24 hours to get this frame set. They need to get to work now.

Bob Gates? The man was intimately connected to Iran-Contra. Yes, he is a huge improvement over the current office holder. But please don't get carried away with this. He may be a realist, but he is still corrupt.

And last but not least... that scream you heard in the middle of Bush's press conference? That was Andrew Sullivan you heard. He finally got his wish. And I can't wait to see the post that comes as a result.

UPDATE: ThinkProgress has the video.

Andrea Mitchell is on MSNBC right now trying to spin this as Bush "unwittingly" misleading the public. I'm sorry... I know she is tired, but is she high too? "Unwittingly?" Bush lied to the nation. On purpose. And he knows it.

Watch the video. He spins his lie by saying he had no choice, but he makes it crystal clear that he's did it on purpose.

UPDATE II: If even Byron York and KLo over at The Corner are essentially calling you a liar
