The AP calls it: Webb takes Virginia.
I find it unbelievably fitting that the final two races that put the Dems over the top in the Senate were in Montana and Virginia. The Mountain West and the Old South. A Montana rancher and a former Reagan Republican.
Webb's story really is the perfect vehicle for describing what's happening in our country today. A Vietnam vet who turned away from the Democratic Party in the 1970's to become a member of the Reagan administration in the 1980's. But then the Republican Party moved hard right and Webb eventually came back home. When Allen and others wouldn't stand up for the soldiers Webb had spent his life serving and defending, he decided to step up and do his duty once more.
Meanwhile, out in Montana we get the story of the mountains turning blue. Tester's not just a farmer - he's an organic farmer. The people of the West have come to understand in a very serious way that environmentalism isn't just good for our planet, its good for our economy and our national security, too. They remember what the Republican Party has forgotten: this nation is far more committed to pragmatism than it is to extremism, and far more dedicated to working together than it is tearing one another apart.
This is not your father's Democratic Party, kids. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
