As is so often the case, Digby is right.
I realize that constitutionally a president's ability to pardon is absolute and unchecked, but...
If a president can pardon the most senior officials in his own administration after they have been convicted in a court of law, doesn't that encourage future administrations to break the law? After all, if the system is built such that it is impossible to punish people for their misdeeds, what is going to stop them from breaking the law? Embarrassment? Humiliation? Perhaps that will check some people; but for those who believe they are on some sort of divine mission to save the nation, well...
Just asking.
