Cakewalk? (Updated)

Via Kevin Drum: The man who declared Iraq would be a "cakewalk" now believes that the best we can hope for is that Iraq will become a new Syria.

Let me repeat that.

Ken Adelman, one of the loudest cheerleaders for the war with Iraq, now believes the best possible outcome is that Iraq will become a new Syria.

Old Iraqi regime: Brutal Baathist dictatorship.
New best-case Iraqi regime: Brutal Baathist dictatorship.

Thousands of lives ended. Hundreds of thousands of lives permanently scarred. Hundreds of billions of Dollars spent. And the best we can hope for is a regime no better than the one we once had.

Brilliant.

UPDATE: Gotta love the Internet. Like Kevin, I focused on the implications of Adelman's statement about Syria. Daniel Munz, by contrast, focused on the bits about the Philippines and South Korea, the models on which his initial support for the war in Iraq were based. Turns out that may be the more damning part of the statement.
