For those who don't know, CPAC is one of the most important annual gatherings of conservatives in America. Everyone who is anyone makes an appearance, and this year, all of the big people seeking the Republican nomination are in attendance. So too, for obvious reasons, are all of the major conservative pundits. Including Ann Coulter.
Via Crooks and Liars (and yes, they have the video), here are the end of her remarks:
“I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot–so….’"
Watch the video to gauge the crowd reaction for yourself.
If ever there was a moment for the "liberal media" to rear its head it is now. All off the major Republican candidates are in attendance. Mitt Romney, in fact, spoke just before Coulter. Will they denounce her? And if so, what will they say?
If a pundit on the left said something like this about a Republican candidate, I promise you, the feeding frenzy would last at least 72 hours. At least...
So consider this a test. This isn't a nobody. It's Ann Coulter.
UPDATE: Yes, I know. Everyone knows she is a nut. But nutty or not, she is a nationally syndicated columnist who is both accepted and embraced by both the national conservative community and the mainstream media. That matters.
UPDATE II: Edwards apparently sees this is a fundraising opportunity. That's not exactly the public response I was hoping for from the Edwards camp.
Meanwhile, Greg Sargent reminds us this isn't the first time Coulter has been deliberately offensive at CPAC. From last year:
Referring to Iran, Coulter said, "What if they start having one of these bipolar episodes with nuclear weapons? I think our motto should be, post-9/11, 'Raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.'"
UPDATE III: The DNC responds.
UPDATE IV: Andrew Sullivan is tracking the reaction from numerous bloggers. More like this, please.
