Gonzales to Go?

Some signs suggest it may happen today.

First, from ThinkProgress:

Gonzales was supposed to appear before a House committee on Thursday to discuss the Justice Department budget and other issues not related to the U.S. Attorney purge. He just canceled.

That was posted at 1:47pm. Then, a few minutes before 3:30, Josh Marshall posted this:

THE PRESIDENT WILL MAKE A STATEMENT ON THE U.S. ATTORNEY MATTER SHORTLY AFTER RETURNING FROM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI AT 5:45 PM, EDT, TODAY, MARCH 20, 2007, IN THE DIPLOMATIC RECEPTION ROOM

Of course, earlier this morning ThinkProgress had posted this:

“President Bush sent a powerful message of support Tuesday for embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, calling his longtime friend to express unwavering support in the face of calls for his resignation. The White House also denied reports that it was looking for possible successors for Gonzales. ‘Those rumors are untrue,’ White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.”

I suppose we'll know more in a little over an hour.

UPDATE: CNN says I got it backwards:

What is expected from the president is that he will say that Attorney General Gonzales has his full, unyielding support."

Keep on digging, George. You may not know it yet, but that hole you're in doesn't have a bottom.
